GREAT HARBOUR, Jost Van Dyke, VI – Claude Skelton-Cline, the 2nd district candidate under the National Democratic Party (NDP) umbrella, urged Jost Van Dyke residents that their 145 votes can change the political landscape for the district.

Speaking at a tent meeting last Sunday, August 28, 2011 in Great Harbour, Mr. Cline told residents that for too long they are treated like second class citizens. However, in the upcoming general election, he said they have to power to make a change.

“JVD I hear you and I feel you and I promised you will not be hoodwinked and bamboozled anymore. JVD you have 145 voters on your voter’s list, we want all 145. We have to vote them out, we gotta push them out. I don’t want them to get one vote… put aside your differences and vote as one block. One vote matters and your 145 votes can change the landscape,” the novice political figure asserted.

He promised if elected he will set up an office in JVD, where he or an individual who has the interest of the people will cater to their needs. The reason for this Pastor Cline explained, is that the purpose of power is not to manipulate and control other people, it is to empower.

In addition to that, he vowed to make the island more self-contained.

“In the 21st century, this island does more business per capita than Tortola…therefore you must have the proper facilities,” he stated.

Among several of the “injustices” he outlined that are meted out to residents is the lack of security.

According to him, at a recent Royal Virgin Islands Police Force’s meeting on the island, residents were informed that because of the shortage of officers, two days out of the week, residents will only have one officer.

“How in the world can you have one officer to an entire island and arm him with just a flash light?…the National Security Council, the Governor and the Government that is unacceptable. You treat our people as second class citizens. They pay their taxes, they work hard for their money they deserve proper service,” he charged.

Furthermore, Pastor Cline queried the progress of the island’s Multi-Purpose Centre.

“They had a ground breaking ceremony, had gold shovels and hats, had the media there taking pictures with them grinning and it was not funny. Tell you they are going build you a community centre and if you go back there right now the trees are as tall as the sand that they put up,” Pastor Cline pointed out.

On February 12, 2011, there was a ground breaking ceremony for the Centre’s site, and while a date was not given for its commencement, Architect and Project Coordinator Edwin Adams had told Virgin Islands News Online that construction was expected to start as soon as possible with the first phase expected to be completed within eight to 10 months or the end of the year.
