BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Social commentator and host of Honestly Speaking, Pastor Claude O. Skelton-Cline, has said the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) provides better service than the Water and Power Authority (WAPA) in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI).

Skelton-Cline said he noticed residents in the Virgin Islands (VI) comparing the situation with power outages there with what’s happening in the VI. He addressed this topic on the June 10, 2026, airing of his show on ZBVI 780 AM, explaining that he went to school in the USVI, and WAPA has had problems since then.

“Power was going out from then. The BVIEC, in the Virgin Islands, have always had better service than what’s provided in the United States Virgin Islands. So don’t compare what’s happening there with our situation here. It’s apples and oranges.”

Skelton-Cline added that he is sorry to see what is happening in the USVI and hopes the problems are resolved adding, “Some of these people who are running for office and I know they’ve promised before to fix that and I don’t know what the problem is, I’m not going to speak on what I don’t know, but I do hope that they can get that resolved.”

BVIEC &W&SD merging

The government of the Virgin Islands announced that Governor Daniel Pruce assented to the merger of BVIEC and the Water and Sewerage Department (W&SD), paving the way for the establishment of the Virgin Islands Energy and Water Corporation (VIEWCo). This unified entity will be responsible for the delivery of electricity, water, and sewerage services throughout the Territory.

Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) said the merger is a transformative step that will strengthen operational efficiency, improve service delivery, enhance long-term sustainability, and create greater opportunities for coordinated infrastructure planning and investment.

In a June 2026 press release, the Minister described the merger as a “historic moment”.
