BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- The host of Honestly Speaking, Pastor Claude O. Skelton-Cline, has embarked on a campaign for the Virgin Islands (VI) to make ‘shegeddy’ the national curse word.

During the June 2, 2026, airing of his show on ZBVI 780 AM titled ‘What we know is not true’, he said, “I told you a couple [of] weeks ago I’m looking for sheggedy to become the national curse word of the Virgin Islands.”

He described sheggedy as a way to curse without going to hell. “You don’t have to use all them big expletive [words]. I’m trying to give you a sanitised word we all can use- Christians, non-Christians, Jews, Muslims.”

The clergyman was at the time listing some of the issues affecting the Virgin Islands when he pivoted to talk about what should be the "National cuss word".

Icononise sheggedy

Skelton-Cline added, “As a matter of fact, where is Kareem Hull? Tell Kareem Hull I’m looking for him. I want him to icononise sheggedy…and I want to empower everybody to substitute all them other curse words for sheggedy. Practice using it in a sentence. ‘What the sheggedy is going on?’”

He admitted that he does not know the origin of the word, having heard one of his sisters use it for the first time.

The BVI Tourist Board, he continued, should also get on board, adding, “Right up there with our national dish, our national curse word is sheggedy. Cause a lot of sheggedy going on

The pastor added that users of sheggedy won’t go to hell. “I done passed it by St Peter,” he said through chuckles.
