DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- Guyanese living and working in the Virgin Islands have been encouraged to return to their homeland to play a part in the country’s rapid development.

This invitation was extended by Guyana’s Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan A. Edghill, who recently met with members of the Guyanese diaspora living in the Virgin Islands.

The ‘Meet and Greet’ organised by the Guyanese Association in the Virgin Islands was held at the Save the Seed Centre and attracted members of the Guyanese diaspora from across the territory.

During the engagement, Minister Edghill highlighted the unprecedented transformation taking place in Guyana under the leadership of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali.

According to a Facebook post by Mr Edghill, he outlined major advancements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, housing, energy, and economic diversification, emphasising the wide range of opportunities now available for Guyanese at home and abroad.

Mr Edghill said he encouraged members of the diaspora to play an active role in the country's continued development by returning home to contribute their expertise, entrepreneurial talent, and investment capital, noting that Guyana's growth story presents unique opportunities for national and personal advancement.

The Guyanese minister was reportedly a guest of the New Life Baptist Church when he was invited to meet with Guyanese living and working in the Virgin Islands.

‘Exceptional growth’

Even as the global economy faces mounting uncertainty from geopolitical tensions, rising energy prices and slowing growth, Guyana is expected to remain one of the world’s standout economic performers, with the World Bank projecting that the country’s economy will continue to record exceptional growth on the back of expanding oil production.

The assessment was made in the World Bank’s June 2026 Global Economic Prospects report, which painted a cautious picture of the global economy while singling out Guyana as a bright spot in the Latin America and Caribbean region.

The report classified Guyana among the world’s energy-exporting emerging market and developing economies, underscoring the country’s growing role in global energy markets.
