Ernesto McClean found guilty of robbing Scotiabank
Virgin Islands Supreme Court
25 year old Ernesto McClean, accused of stealing close to $350,000 from Scotia Bank over two and a half years ago, was found guilty in the Virgin Islands Supreme Court on Thursday afternoon.
McClean, who was an employee of the bank at the time of the robbery, was out on bail during the trial and on suspension from work.
He claimed that on June 11, 2007, he was held hostage, beaten and forced to assist the bank robbers. He was charged with burglary for stealing cash and cheques amounting to approximately $347,474.00.
The prosecution proved in their case that Mr. McClean engineered the theft, having access to bank keys, knowledge of the alarm system and occupational responsibilities, involving loading the ATM machines.
The prosecution upheld that Mr. McClean’s injuries and testimonies were part of an elaborate fabrication.
The defendant ws represented in court by the law firm of Dr. J. S. Archibald Q.C.
Mr. McClean will be sentenced on March 31.
