ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Minister for Communications and Works, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) has called on residents of the Virgin Islands (VI) to renew their commitment to preparedness, vigilance and collective responsibility, as the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season commenced on June 1, 2026.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, predicted 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes and 1 to 3 major hurricanes across the Atlantic basin this hurricane season.

“While we cannot predict the exact path or impact of any system, we do know that early preparation is our strongest defence against the effects of severe weather,” Hon Rymer said.

Proactive steps being taken

According to the minister, the Ministry of Communications and Works, in collaboration with the Public Works Department and other key agencies, has been taking proactive steps to safeguard communities.

“Our teams will ensure that drains and ghuts are clear, manage vegetation, inspect roads and infrastructure, and strengthen critical communication systems to ensure that accurate and timely information reaches the public.”

His ministry is also working closely with the Department of Disaster Management, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission and local telecom providers to enhance the resilience of the cellular broadcasting network.

“This collaboration is aimed at ensuring that emergency alerts and critical information can be delivered effectively during adverse weather conditions and other disaster events.”

Take simple but essential steps

Hon Rymer said that while the government continues its work, preparedness begins at home. “I urge every resident to take simple but essential steps today. Review your emergency and evacuation plans, restock disaster supply kits, secure your homes and surroundings, identify your nearest shelters and evacuation routes, stay informed through official government communication channels, let us also look out for one another, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, ensuring that no one is left unprepared.”

He added that preparedness is not a one-time action; it is an ongoing commitment. “By acting early and remaining informed, we strengthen not only our individual households but the resilience of our entire territory.”

Hon Rymer encouraged everyone to remain alert, proactive and united in protecting families, communities and the Virgin Islands. “Stay safe, stay prepared.”

how about we start burying the electrical cables underground so it doesn't take months to get back power when we have a storm

Definitely on to something. Bury the electric and put water pipes up in the air. Easy to see leaks and repair and no need to dig up the road.

Seacows, we back to using the old pipes so will be digging it all up again soon. What happened to the fancy pipe welding machine??

How many ghuts have been cleaned out?? Besides blowing smoke what else have you actually done to mitigate hurricane damage???
Your hurricane preparation mismanagement is just like your sewage mismanagement (still pumping Road Town out at Slaney Point), just like your road mismanagement (left the leaking water pipes under the new Hodges Creek road).
Please list just one successfully completed capital project!!

Tire of reading and hearing politicians boasting about 10% positivity action done, but 90% inaction undone, as if 100% were already done. The VIP government has failed the voters of the British Virgin Islands sadly, sell uu out like slaves for money, and lying to our face, daily.
