ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is encouraging farmers and fishers to prepare for the 2026 Atlantice Hurricane Season which began on June 1, 2026.

The hurricane season, which runs until November 30, 2026, has been predicted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to have 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes and 1 to 3 major hurricanes across the Atlantic basin.

The department called on farmers and fishers to secure property and assets with care.

Advice to farmers

Livestock farmers have been encouraged to ensure that their animals are up to date with treatments, have enough feed stored in a secure and protected area, and that veterinary and medical supplies are well-stocked. They are also urged to complete necessary repairs to structures and fencing.

"In the event of a hurricane warning, livestock should not be kept in enclosed structures. It is advisable to harvest mature crops early to prevent losses from wind, rain, or flooding," the department's press release added.

Advice to fishers

Fishers, meanwhile, have been advised to remove pots and other fishing gear from the sea and, if possible, secure their vessels on land. They may also shelter their vessels in designated areas. Loose or movable materials should be cleared away and secured, and an inventory of all equipment and machinery should be documented.

"The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is encouraging farmers and fishers to prepare or update their disaster preparedness and recovery plans for their families and properties, closely monitor weather reports from reliable sources, and remain vigilant," the press release concluded.
