ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Director of the Department of Disaster Management Sharleen DaBreo has echoed the call for residents to keep off the roads so that the emergency personnel can have uninhibited access to the roadways as clean up efforts take place today following the passage of Hurricane Earl.

Crews from the Public Works Department, Electricity Corporation, Water & Sewerage, Fire Services and police are all out this morning working feverishly on the clean up operation.

Ms. DaBreo reported that the road network on Tortola is passable, but those persons who need to be on the roads must exercise caution. She said the territory was fortunate that the system did not bring with it a lot of rains and therefore not a lot of landslides.

“I am pleading with the public to allow these services to operate,” she said.

According to the DDM, Earl impacted the VI as a Category 4 Hurricane, with hurricane force winds. “Overall, we came off pretty good considering system passed closed to us. There are a number of trees broken and blocking the roadways and we’re trying to make sure these trees are cleared and get the BVI back to normalcy.”

Regarding Anegada, the DDM Director said they are in contact with the fire service and a few people on that island. She said the wind conditions there are not to the point to issue an all clear so Anegada remains under an emergency phase and that will be reassessed this afternoon.

She said the majority of the impact on Anegada is on the marine side and efforts will continue today after the winds have subsided to conduct a reconnaissance including the Governor and other officials on the UK Navy helicopter.

DaBreo noted that while Earl is no longer impacting the territory, Tropical Storm Fiona is already formed and there is a possibility that the Virgin Islands may be going under a tropical storm watch for Fiona sometime today.

Government offices, schools, the Terrence B. Lettsome Airport and the seaports will remain closed today, the DDM reported, as the focus remains on assessing the damage and cleaning up.
