Workplace health and safety courses at HLSCC
ROADTOWN, Tortola, VI – The Office of Centres and Institutes at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College has announced the offering of a four-day training course in workplace health and safety as part of its series of offerings during the Fall 2010 Semester.
The course will begin on Friday September 24, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and will continue over the next three Fridays at the same time, ending on October 15. Classes will be held at the College’s Centre for Applied Marine Studies, Paraquita Bay.
The training is aimed at helping participants devise a framework for workplace safety management, assisting with writing health and safety policies, promoting understanding of risks and hazards, and engendering the practise of safety in the workplace. There will also be sessions on managing the control of hazardous substances, facilitating emergency planning, and conducting accident investigations.
Although the course is geared primarily toward compliance officers for health and safety and departmental managers in both the private and public sectors, anyone interested in the subject of health and safety at the workplace is welcome to attend.
Additionally, the recently passed Labour Code places strong emphasis on safety in the workplace.
Facilitator for the course will be Spencer Grant, Head of Technical Studies in the Workforce Training Division at the College. Mr. Grant holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Bolton University in the United Kingdom and a Master’s in Education from Manchester University, also in the UK.
