ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – In a joint statement issued by the Governor Boyd McCleary, Premier Hon Ralph T O’Neal and Permanent Secretary within the Premier’s Office Rosalie Adams condolences were expressed for the illegal migrants who died after their vessel ran aground a reef on Monday morning.

Here is the statement in full.

It is with great sadness that we confirm that eight people, including children and babies, have perished in the tragic boat incident in the early hours of Monday morning.

Governor McCleary

Our local law enforcement agencies and volunteers from the Virgin Islands Search and Rescue (VISAR), along with the United States Coast Guard, have been working all hours since the incident took place to help the survivors and carrying out search, rescue and recovery missions.

We praise them, and other officials working on the response, for their efforts.

We also would wish to thank the officials from St. Maarten for their assistance in the ongoing investigation and members of the local Haitian community who have provided help.

Human trafficking is a despicable crime, carried out by criminals taking advantage of innocent people seeking a better life. At a time of good will to all mankind, our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost family or friends in this incident.
