CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) — The U.S. Virgin Islands has received nearly half a million dollars in federal funds to help preserve coral reefs near the island of St. Croix.
Congressional delegate Donna Christensen says the money will help create four jobs at the St. Croix East End Marine Park, including a coordinator for the park and two rangers.
Coral reefs across the Caribbean and elsewhere face a growing threat of extinction from rising ocean temperatures.
The $473,000 in funds were issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Christensen made the announcement on Friday.
