ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Two Virgin Islanders are expected to make an appearance today Tuesday, February 8, 2011 in the St. John’s Magistrate’s Court after they were caught with nearly $23M worth of cocaine in Antigua and Barbuda over the week-end.

According to Caribarena Antigua, an online newspaper, the drugs were hauled in during a joint operation by the Office of National Drug and Money Laundering Control Policy (ONDCP) and the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force Coast Guard (ABDF CG).

The seized drugs.

The combined weight of the cocaine was 169.65 kilos, with a street value of around $23,975,000.

It was found aboard a 35ft single mast sailing vessel stopped and searched on Saturday, February 5, 2011 off the southwestern end of Antigua on its way to a neighbouring island.

Caribarena Antigua reported that the two men, aged 38 and 61, have been arrested and charged with possession of cocaine, possession with intent to transfer, drug trafficking, and being concerned with the supply of cocaine.

Law enforcement officers are expected that more arrests may be made as the investigation continues, the online newspaper stated.
