Tola’s Big 3 turn up the heat in VG!
Most valuable player, Tortola
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Inspired by Trigga, Bolo and Gumba, the Tortola All Star team snapped out of a funk that had last almost three quarters of the game to rally past the Virgin Gorda Team and record a 86-65 victory in the Delta Petroleum All Star Best of the Best match up in VG this weekend.
According to M.V.P. of the game, Kennedy Bass, the VG Team was well and truly on top early on.
“As the game started VG as beating us badly!” he exclaimed. “We were missing a load of easy shots and were playing to unselfish at times, but we found a lil chemistry, just when it mattered, with JR, Trigga, Bolo and Gumba, along with Dameon Ottley, that got us going”
In fact Virgin Gorda were ahead right until the end of the third quarter, but a scoring run that lasted well into the fourth put a hold on their chances. At the half way point Virgin Gorda side were leading 40 – 31 and at the end of the third quarter that lead had been reduced to just 2 points, 55 – 53. Then as the more experienced Tortola team started to play ball the game became lopsided with the final score 86-65 in favour of Tortola.
Bass top scored with 14 points and 3 steals, Jason Edwin scored 13 with 3 rebounds and Dameon Ottley had 12 points and 4 rebounds. For Virgin Gorda Gary Hillhouse hit 16 points with 6 rebounds and Randy George scored 12 points and 8 points.
“It was a good, very good game,” said Bass. A sentiment shared by Avery Percival who said he found the game, “To be a positive experience.”
Tortola picked up the trophy and the first prize of $2,500 with Virgin Gorda taking home $1,500. The Slam Dunk award went to Shaun “Chino” Woods, the 3 Pointer went to Jason Edwin and Duron Jones won the free throw award.
Trevor “West” Stevens claimed he had never seen so many people at any sporting event in the Virgin Islands and took his hat off to Delta Petroleum.
“My team lost to the more experienced Tola team,” he said. “But in the end basketball won and everyone had a great time.”
BVI Basketball President, Byron Hodge stated, “These Inter Island Games are a beautiful thing. Basketball is a competitive sport and with these activities, people get to see the hidden talented treasures we have here in the BVI. The Federation commends Mr. Trevor Stevens and his team for their efforts and wishes them continued success”
He went on to add he hoped to foster stronger links with Delta Petroleum citing an upcoming 3 v 3 Basketball Tournament in December as something he hoped Delta would get involved with. “I have made several attempts in the past, but commitments were never fulfilled. I will be approaching them again for support.”
