Tech Voc programme in the works for inmates

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – By the third quarter of 2012, Government will be implementing a technical and vocational skills programme for inmates to learn a certifiable trade, declared Minister for Education and Culture Myron Walwyn in the House of Assembly (HOA) on Monday December 19, 2011.
“Madam Speaker my Ministry will be developing a more comprehensive reform programme for inmates at Her Majesty’s Prison. No longer should that facility be used as a holding ground for persons that have gone on the outside of the law, but it should also serve as an opportunity to reform those individuals and prepare them to re-enter society as productive citizens,” the Minister stated.
Hon. Walwyn argued that when reformed individuals have an opportunity to work and make a contribution, “they continue to engage in positive aspects of life that reduces their chances of becoming repeat offenders”.
The Minister is also seeking the assistance of the community to make the reform process a success. “I ask that our Christian community, businesses and private individuals, give newly released young people an opportunity to add to the development of our islands, without discrimination. With community support I do believe that we can rewind the growth of our prison population that has spiraled out of control,” he added.

thank u mr walwyn but that was my idea i said it many times on edmond show when i was there live with my products i said it at sea cow,s bay community centre and i was getting the materials together to start teaching the prisoners skills to help themselves to knit, to sew ,to produce vegan foods, to make soaps ,candles ,to do mosaics to crochets etc but i hope the skills being taught to them will help them to elevate themselves and i am happy that one of my ideas is the first thing on the agenda it shows that my visions are the right decisions eventhough i am on the opposition

Walwyn, specify young people who have unfortunately fallen by the wayside. Not the hardback sex offenders (who we really don’t want back in our society). Kandy, who tried to kill an innocent baby, Verna who steal over half a million dollars etc. Those kinda people, we need them to come out and be employers, not employees. So they will know what it is like to have people like themselves on the job.

yea thats is the girl idea indeed cause i too was impress with her stuffs when she gave the speech and i heard her say she wants to teach prisoners special needs and elders .I teach at high school and she did a demonstration there this was her idea indeed !!!!
Hope to look into the interviewing and hiring of principals at ESHS too, if you truly want to make a change those three unqualified principals needs to be interviewed.
I applaud this idea. This is a very good initiative. It’s just for the business community to gain the trust of the young people once they are released into society.
