ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The students of the Althea Scatliffe Primary were bursting with excitement yesterday afternoon Friday November 18, 2011 as the school wrapped up its week-long cultural activities with a multifaceted display of talent.
Students and teachers wore colourful garments that were true to the theme, “From Whence We Came: Our Virgin Islands History.”
The Elmore Stoutt High School started the ball rolling and entertained with some sweet steel pan music much to the delight of some 300 plus students, who clapped along.
Under the tutelage of the school’s principal, Marieta Headley, the Junior Heritage Dancers wowed with a square dance with the young ladies looking radiant and the boys dapper in white shirts and black pants.
The ASPS Mocko Jumbies as usual were spectacular and according to Mrs. Headley, she was pleased with the talent on display.
She revealed that budding calypsonians, who took the stage, were assisted by Algie Mathavious for several weeks before the grand occasion.
Additionally, using storytelling to speak about the Territory’s history, Ester Potter gave a riveting performance, while Razor Bladez, a young fungi band, concluded the cultural affair.
Several Government officials were spotted at the event including Minister for Communications and Works Mark Vanterpool, Minister for Education and Culture Myron Walwyn and 5th district representative Dolores Christopher.
As for the overwhelming support shown, Principal Headley said the parents were very responsive and provided whatever needed to be done for the event to be a success.
“All the food and drinks that were here was free and the students were able to sample the peas soup, tarts, peppermint candies and other goodies,” she said with a smile.
Culture Week is held annually in November to highlight and showcase Virgin Islands culture. It was first celebrated in 1994 and strives to promote and preserve the Territory’s cultural heritage.
