RVIPF: Protect valuable during holiday season
Particularly around the Christmas Season, Police, through public service announcements and press releases, continue to urge the public to secure windows and lock doors before leaving vehicles and to store valuables out of sight of potential thieves.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Police are still recording a high number of thefts from motor vehicles with the most active times being over the weekend and are reminding the public to plan in advance to properly secure valuables before leaving home and to take special precautions while at public events, a police press release added.
The release further stated that cellular phones, laptops and ipods are easily accessible in unsecured vehicles and when in plain view, will increase the chances of a vehicle being targeted. Handbags remain at the top of the list of items stolen from motor vehicles and from tabletops and chairs, in crowded bars or on benches at sporting and entertainment facilities.
“While Police are increasing their visibility during the holiday season, it is still very difficult to prevent these types of crimes if owners do not take personal responsibility,” the release pointed out.
Vehicle parts such as grills, rims as well as stereos speakers and licence stickers are also becoming popular items for thieves and in recent times, entire car wheels have been removed, leaving vehicles on cement blocks especially when left for days unattended in parking lots around the airport or at the ferry docks.
