ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The removing of soil and debris, which started on Sunday June 12, is still on going at Hannah’s as the Public Works Department is cautious to avoid complicating matters as engineers seek to bring relief to the occupants of the house that the retaining wall collapsed on recently.

“Working is still going on. We have to be very careful how we do it. We do not want to rush it,” Minister of Communications and works Hon. Julian Fraser told VINO on Tuesday.

“We have already started to demolish the collapsed wall at Hannah’s…The wall fell up against the building rendering access to the apartments out of commission…so we are committed to making sure that no further damage comes to the house by removing the wall off the building and that the landlord and his tenants can access the building as it was in the past,” Minister Fraser further stated.

The 3rd District Representative also said his Ministry would next seek to have the wall replaced as soon as possible.

“The next step would be looking into the feasibility of replacing it because it is not just a matter of protecting the house but it is also a matter of protecting the road above and we have an obligation for the safety of all citizens especially the ones that traverse the area. So in that regard I think that we will be working towards having it replaced.”

Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Julian Fraser.

The wall came crashing down around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday June 8, 2011 and nearly crushed a woman, who just managed to reverse her vehicle out of danger.

VINO understands that the building is an apartment complex belonging to Mr. Thomas Richardson.

A man, who said he was in the home when the incident occurred, had told VINO that his sister heard the creaking sound of the wall as it was about to collapse and backed away although slamming the vehicle into an object. He said his sister was not hurt but was shaken by the near tragic experience.

Tenants, who also occupy the apartment, said they never suspected that the retaining wall was in danger of collapsing.
