Public Service Week 2010 officially launched
His Excellency the Governor Mr. David Pearey: GIS
His Excellency the Governor, David Pearey will officially launch Public Service Week 2010 today with a television and radio broadcast.
Government ministries, departments and statutory bodies will observe the tenth Public Service Week under the theme, “Modernising the Public Service for 2010 and Beyond”.
The Governor in his message said, “The theme for the week is very timely as it is not only forward-following, but also invites us to reflect on how much the public service has grown and evolved.”
He shared, “In the face of significant budgetary pressures, we should all be seeking ways to economise and offer our key services at far lower costs. The answer to the question has to be a resounding “yes we should” and I invite all public servants to contribute actively to this essential drive and greater efficiency.”
The Governor added, “I am pleased to highlight the fact that most of our ministries and departments have taken up the challenge to modernise and in so doing have introduced comprehensive change programmes that are forcing them to restructure and re-focus. Such changes will be evident I am sure, as you visit our various offices during their Open House Days. I invite you to take advantage to these opportunities to ask questions, make suggestions and learn as much as you can about how these agencies interface with members of the public.”
A number of new items has been added to the week of activities such as a Pep Rally on Monday from the grounds of the Central Administration Complex to the A.O. Shirley Recreation Ground where civil servants will be attired in their respective team colours showcasing their public service pride. Additionally, Open House will be held the entire week in the various ministries and departments.
The annual recognition ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 20 where public servants will be recognised for 10, 25 and 35 years of service. Mr. Franklyn Michael, Programme Officer of the Caribbean Centre for Development Administration (CARICAD) will deliver a motivational speech at the ceremony.
CARICAD will also mount a booth at the Wellness and Safety Event on Wednesday, May 19. Retirees from the public service will be recognised at a dinner on Saturday, May 22. Dr. C. Lucia Woods, Pastor, Agape Total Life Center, will deliver the keynote address and Ms. Pearlette Dawson, former Chief Training Officer and recent retiree, will respond on behalf of the retirees.
Activities will also be held on the sister islands throughout the week.
The public is encouraged to take part in the week of activities. A full schedule of events can be found on www.bviplatinum.com, www.bvinews.com and www.webtv.com.
Public Service Week is held annually to highlight the contributions of the public service to the Territory’s development and to give the public an opportunity to gain a better appreciation and understanding of the work of the public service.
