ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – This year’s Public Service Week will be held under the theme, “A Public Service for Efficiency Excellence and Innovation” from June 18 through 25, 2011.

According to a Government Information Service (GIS) press release, the week will see government ministries, departments and statutory bodies competing in various sporting activities such as softball, basketball, bowling, scrabble, dominoes and open house.

Permanent Secretary in the Deputy Governor’s Office David Archer, speaking to the Department of Information and Public Relations about the week of activities, explained that the teams are excited about the week.

He said, “Last year the team’s concept for the week of events was reintroduced and the spirit of competition was evident. Team C, which consists of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Health and Social Development dominated the competitions and were the overall champions for the week. It is evident by the preparatory work which has been done thus far that the other teams are working just as hard as Team C to win the games.”

In addition to the sporting activities, teams will be competing in the Public Service Week Quiz Bowl about the public service. A family fun day will also be held during the week at the Cane Garden Bay Beach where public officers can relax with their co-workers and members of their families.

Leading up to the week of activities, pre-events will be held for all the sporting activities beginning on June 14 with dominoes at 12noon in the Breezeway of the Central Administration Complex and basketball at 6pm at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex. Scrabble will be held on June 16 at 12noon in the Breezeway of the Central Administration Complex and a softball game at 6pm on the Old Recreation Grounds.

The public is encouraged to come out and support the public officers as they compete in the various events.

Public Service Week is held annually to highlight the contribution of the public service to the Territory’s development and give members of the public an opportunity to gain a better appreciation and understanding of the work of the Public Service.
