HOA approves Ayana Hull-Brathwaite as new TRC chairman
The House of Assembly has approved Attorney At Law Ayana Hull-Braithwaite as the new Chairman of the TRC.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Second House of Assembly (HOA) has approved the appointment of Attorney At Law Ayana Hull-Braithwaite as Chairman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) in the Virgin Islands for a period of three (3) years with effect from December 15, 2011.
The Motion was brought to the House on Wednesday December 21, 2011 by Minister for Communications and Works Hon. Mark Vanterpool. The Motion stated that Section 7 (1) and (2) of the Telecommunications Act, 2006 (No. 10 of 2006) provides for the establishment of a Board of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, comprising a minimum of three and a maximum of five Commissioners.
Virgin Islands News Online had firstly and accurately reported that Hull-Braithwaite was tipped to fill the position vacated by former TRC Chairman Collin Scatliffe, who resigned two months ago to seek political office in the 4th District as an independent candidate. Fiona Forbes was the acting Chairman.
Minister Vanterpool said Hull-Braithwaite was willing to serve in the Chairmanship and he was very confident that she would do so without bias and “will be a strong person to help to guide the affairs of the TRC”. He also thanked former Chairman Collin Scatliffe for his service and said the people of the Virgin Islands appreciated the work he had done. Appreciation was also extended to acting CEO of the TRC, Guy Malone; Commissioner Russell Jones and Deputy Chairman Fiona Forbes. Hon. Vanterpool said Forbes was willing to continue serving and “will play an integral part of the TRC team”.
Premier Dr. D. Orlando Smith said Hull-Braithwate was very capable, “very smart, very talented young lady and also very committed to working to whatever task she sets her mind to and I have seen her in operation and can testify to her commitment. I have no doubt that she would bring that same sort of commitment and dedication and smarts to the job of being the Chairman of the TRC”.
Opposition member and former Minister for Communication and Works Hon. Julian Fraser RA also gave his support for the new Chairman but warned that the position was one where there are lots of obstacles and lots of work to be done.
In 2004, Hull-Brathwaite was admitted as a Barrister in England and Wales and a Barrister of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (Virgin Islands). She currently works at the private firm Maples and Calder.
