ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A heated exchange of words between two legislators forced the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Roy Harrigan to recess the House for more than 30 minutes to iron out the ‘nitty gritty’ of insufficient information coming out of the Education Ministry.

Today Thursday, December 23, Second District Representative Alvin Christopher told the House that certain information requested from the Ministry of Education was outstanding which he viewed “as a total violation of the Standing Order”.

Legislators have converged to debate the estimates of the 2011 budget.

According to Hon. Christopher, over the past two weeks legislators were promised information and they are still awaiting that information. He pinpointed that some of the burning questions that needed to be answered were the youth programmes that were supposedly suspended yet monies were allocated for them in 2011.

“…The University of the West Indies, programme of youths that were suspended by the General Auditor…nearly one million dollars…yet monies are being funded for these programmes,” Hon. Christopher stated.

However, Minister for Education and Culture, Andrew Fahie, interjected and accused the 2nd District Representative of casting aspersions to the public that he was the one withholding the information.

He emphatically stated that he would never block anyone from getting the information and pointed out during the Standing Finance Committee deliberations he was absent due to medical reasons. He further stated that if Hon. Christopher needed any data he could have asked the Permanent Secretary within his Ministry.

“I will not sit down here and be a scapegoat for anybody,” Hon. Fahie declared.

The information Hon. Christopher needed was subsequently given to him at the resumption of the debate.
