The January 12, 2010 earthquake caused severe damage to Haiti, and left many dead, now recent flooding has taken a toll on the island along with cholera outbreak.

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A public forum to be held at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Auditorium on Wednesday November 10, 2010 will discuss an ongoing Haiti relief project and how the country is recovering since it suffered a major earthquake in January. The forum will begin at 6:00 p.m.

The BVI Haitian Disaster Relief Effort and Haiti Awareness and Relief Committee at HLSCC have partnered to host the event. The theme for the discussion is, “Haiti: Ten Months Later,” and the overall aim is to enhance awareness in the British Virgin Islands about the reconstruction process taking place in the Caribbean island.

The discussions will be led by Pierre Rudolphe Leger, a well-known international development specialist who has worked in 70 countries worldwide. Mr. Leger specialises in programme and project development planning, disaster management planning, and management.

Mr. Leger is expected to highlight a particular project for which the Haitian Disaster Relief Effort in the BVI is a partner, while also giving an opportunity for questions and answers after his presentation. President of HLSCC Dr. Karl Dawson will also give remarks.

In January this year, HLSCC set forth both short and long term goals to create awareness and hopefully provide relief to Haiti following the earthquake. The following month, the College hosted a forum to engage discussion about Haiti with the aim of helping residents in the BVI better understand the challenges being faced and how the territory could respond.
