ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – There is a certain sense of arrogance being portrayed by politicians of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP), which is a clear indication of disrespect to residents, opined talk show host Cromwell Smith.

Mr. Smith, host of Umoja, made this disclosure last evening, Thursday February 17, 2011 while discussing some of the Ministers’ approach and response to questions pertaining to the community over the past few days.

He made reference to Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, Hon. Omar Hodge’s remark on the lemur issue where he stated he did not have to listen to anybody because he was the Minister.

Hon. Hodge was at the time a guest on VIP radio programme “Let’s Talk” on Monday, February 14, 2011 when he was questioned by a caller about granting permission to Sir. Richard Branson, a British millionaire, to import lemurs to Mosquito Island.

The caller accused Hon. Hodge of dictatorship after it was brought up that he refused to listen to the Government agencies.

“No I am not a dictator… I don’t have to listen to anybody because I am the Minister,” Hon. Hodge had declared.

Meanwhile, Premier O’Neal in yesterday’s sitting of the House of Assembly refused to answer a BiWater question by using rules from the House.

He was at the time being asked by leader of the Opposition, Dr. D Orlando Smith whether he received any letter from the British Government´s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) indicating that the BiWater contract with the Government represented a contingent liability to the Government.

However, Hon. O’Neal responded, “Having read over the section that deals with rules of this House, I think I am in a position not to answer that question.”

And these two scenarios did not settle well with the talk show host. According to Smith, the two politicians’ responses indicate that “they don’t feel that they are obligated to anyone”.

“…All the arrogance and disrespect, we allow it because we are afraid to speak out. People still suffering,” Mr. Smith charged.

please, please can someone tell we who more arrogant than them talk show hosts……Cromwell, Edmond cutting off people who does not agree with him, and Elue Rymer who is not electable and have not gotten over that fact. As for Decastro just a big joke in the BVI.

  3. Ignorance! says:

All of them (Politicians and Talk Show Hosts) are the same. There are very few that are humble and they only remain humble until they get a high position then they become the same.

On a separate but related matter, while I do not agree with what Omar said or how he said it, I do not see anything wrong with the granting of the license to import the monkeys to the island once consultation with environmental experts are done and regulations set out.
