Forecasters predict Igor to reach Hurricane intensity by Sunday
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – In the last advisory issued by the Department for Disaster Management, at 11:00AM the centre of Tropical Storm Igor was located near Latitude 16.4 North/Longitude 31.0 West, or about 465 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands. Movement is to the west at 16mph.
Maximum sustained winds are near 40mph. Igor is expected to move to the west for the next 2-3 days. After this time, a turn to the west-northwest is expected. Igor is not expected to affect any land areas through the next 5 days.
According to the Department for Disaster Management press release, the easterly wind shear that was affecting Igor appears to be relaxing. This should allow for steady intensification. Forecasters bring Igor to hurricane intensity on Sunday. In five days, Igor is predicted to be a category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph.
Residents are urged not to become relaxed, but to remain in a state of high alert. We are now in the peak of the 2010 Hurricane Season, and any preparedness issues not addressed earlier should be taken care of as soon as possible. Further advisories and information on developing systems in the Atlantic can be found on the Department of Disaster Management’s website at www.bviddm.com.
