Hon. Christopher speaking to residents on October 2, 2011.

THE SETTLEMENT, Anegada, VI – 2nd District Representative and former Minister for Communications and Works J. Alvin Christopher believes that the place for the international airport for the Territory is Anegada.

He made the remark at a rally in Anegada on Sunday October 2, 2011.

He noted that he had a vision for Anegada and it included the idea of an international airport, which he said he would share with his colleagues to debate.

“I have a view of where it should be and I believe that the place for it is right here in Anegada. We can no longer look at the Virgin Islands in a single Island, we must look at it in totality and when we build one island we must build all so all together can develop to become the lovely little nation that we are striving to build and we can do it by working together.”

According to Christopher, Government was convinced that an international airport to accommodate air traffic from North America was needed. “The Virgin Islands Party has the vision. We will discuss them and we will look at them openly and make decisions in the best interest of you the people.”

Hon. Christopher recalled visiting Anegada in 1995 with the Honourable Premier Ralph T. O’Neal and on looking at the infrastructure on the island and all that was needed, he had warned the Premier that he had a “hard task ahead”.
“But coming back today and seeing what you have done from then until now, Anegadians I ask you, all my friends of Anegada and I made quite a few over the years, Anegadians and Virgin Gordians, please give Hon. R.T. O’Neal your vote come November 7.”

Meanwhile, 4th District Representative Hon. Vincent Scatliffe, in giving his support to Hon. O’Neal, said he was taught well by the Premier, who was a man of few words but whenever he speaks he does so with assertiveness. “And I will not tolerate anyone disrespecting our Premier. Ladies and gentlemen he has the record of proven leadership stability and credibility in this country. Ladies and gentlemen what message are we sending to our people and persons in authority?” Hon. Scatliffe asked.

CHRIS IS THE MAN WITH ALL THE VISION FOR THE BVI LET HIM BE THE NEXT HEAD OF STATE

  2. sunken land says:

This is a ludicrous idea! first of all the problem that we have is that San Juan as a hub for the caribbean is being phased out because there is no longer a need for it, nor do travellers want to be catching multiple flights. Having a major airport in Anegada solves absolutely nothing, but creates new problems.

We will need airlines to fly from Anegada to Beef Island and VG, a hospital that can cope in the eventuality of a crash with multiple injuries (we barely have that in Tortola as it is), fuel supply (the waters around Anegada are too shallow for tankers to come in and its not practical to barge up fuel trucks), new major infrastructure on Anegada will be needed, which will spoil the beauty of the only one of Natures little secrets.

On top of that the vast majority of guests will be on the wrong island – they might as well be in Antigua, St.Kitts or San Juan.

This is not at all practical so please stop trying to play election games.

  3. up with the win says:

we from the second distrcit voting for J Alvin all the way…we aint messing with that crook from the states deman

  4. Reasonable says:

Leave your airport in Beef Island. If you want to extend Anegada that is find but that is something for the future. You cant put the cart before the horse. Aneagda needs infrastructure. You are going to build an airport and then worry where you are going to put the people when flight delay or cancelled. You sound like a VIP strategist.

  5. Confucius says:

An absolutely ridiculous idea. I am shocked at you Alvin. What are you going to do ~ build a causeway from Anegada to Tortola and Virgin Gorda so people can drive to their ultimate destination?

Before coming with these truly silly ideas, please think things through! What would the operating hours be for an “international” airport on Anegada? Where are all the hotels for people to stay in when their plane lands after the ferries stop running? Where will you find all the fresh water needed to support the hotels? Where will the power plant be located? Sewerage? Where are all the shops and stores for people to visit? You can’t even buy decent fresh food on Anegada for heaven’s sake!

What utter nonsense. The cost to build the infrastructure required to support such a pie-in-the-sky notion would bankrupt us, let alone the cost to build yet another airport!

We are a very small territory with no place to put a major airport that can support huge jets. GET OVER IT and be happy that we are a “boutique” tourist destination with the best sailing grounds in the entire world!

Until commercial jets (with short take off and landing requirements) become commonplace, we will always be a boutique tourist destination. With that in mind, I strongly suggest politicians take their heads out of the clouds and start concentrating on making what we have much, much better.

  6. HELLO!!! says:

Christopher cant think for himself. That was the idea Noel Lloyd came up with years ago..now he piggybacking on it..No Vision..typical VIP…

  7. No Vision for 2nd District says:

First you need to tell us what you are going to do in the 2nd District before you start casting your clouded vision for the BVI. Alvin you are not focused because you are too busy focusing on your opponent, who actually is a better candidate. We need to hear more!

  8. Mike Kee says:

Noel Lloyd had the idea over 40 years ago and if one of these “bright” politicians had taken up the idea back then something could have been put in place, but to all of a suden now come and say you have vision is pure election rhetoric and gimmicks. God will decide who get elected come Nov 7th.

  9. hm says:

This is such a stupid idea! Anegada is so small!! All we need is one international airport and not on Anegada gosh these politicians are so stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am fed up of their dumb ideas that are not even realistic!

    • correction says:

Anegada is the second largest island in the BVI and is many times bigger than Beef Island – that said this is a really Stpid idea

  10. Wise Guy says:

HAHAHA! These lunatics campaigned against NDP for the same thing! NDP would never advocate putting an airport of that magnitude at Anegada LMAO!! WOW! Alvin where are the Chipmunks when you need them? What a LOON!!!

Alvin and others floating this idea got it from the Noel Lloyd documentary when Noel said in an interview, that back in the day he thought that would’ve been a great idea for Anegada, key words being BACK IN THE DAY! Anegada has since developed itself into a quiet, secluded get away, a very peaceful place! It’s TOO LATE to put that vision into action, all Anegada needs is an airstrip that can accomodate probably small private or commercial planes, that’s IT!

I support NDP but if they come back with this massive development without consulting the people and thinking before they speak, I will hold their feet to the fire as well!!

  11. WHAT says:

That’s VIP for you Piggy-banking on someone else’s idea as another poster commented. Which little piggy going be crying all the way home this election I wonder.

  12. Not2Sure says:

I think this is something that should get discussed. Yes, there are lots of problems with the idea (not least – how do most residents and guests then get from Anegada to Tortola…). But long term, eventually, the BVI is going to need a longer runway. And the only place that is going to be is in Anegada. Maybe now is not the time. But let’s have a conversation about it.

What I would *really* like to see is a high speed ferry link to St Thomas airport, and an arrangement with US customs and immigration (like they have in Bahamas and Bermuda) where you can pre-clear into the US either from Road Town in the ferry terminal or onboard the boat.

  13. OJ says:

lets put the airport on the little a race track..ha he he

  14. Lee says:

Alvin cannot come up with ideas on how to improve or beatify the 2nd District, but he visioning international airport for Anegada. He need to consentrate on his district first before he goes to Uncle Ralph’s district to talk about International Airport.

  15. SICK TO MY STOMACH says:

omg i dont think he was thinking, why no vg where the population is way bigger…here we go again..throwing away more money

  16. Angel eyes says:

Before you go along with this rediculus idea of an international airport in anegada, you need to drive up to myers and go in mayaba and see the condition of the road in there, Its as if people living in there do not exsist ,so you better stay focus on the issues at hand .

  17. Quiet Storm says:

Do we need an international airport to facilitate direct flights from Europe, US, Canada, or Far East? A large airport is a significant investment that may not get the use to justify the investment. Can the VI tourism market entice airlines to use it on a consistent basis? Airlines have fix costs that require ridership to cover at least this cost most of the time. They will not establish or stay on a route that is not profitable.

We are a small market and I’m not sure that we have the seat miles to demand and justify direct flights. Instead of investing in an infrastructure that will sit idle for long periods we need to look at ways to differentiate ourselves. We need to look at mode of transportation that meets our needs. Do want to be like some other regional countries that built large airports that has little return on investment, little use and is almost “white elephants.

  18. Ambitious says:

Alvin probably google this idea? Well hell, can you imagine? Is the vision he has for the country? I feel nothing but empathy for this man, he is a sorry soul. You listen to him and he repeats the same thing over and over. I cannot say what his plans, visions or goals are for th 2nd District or the territory.

  19. lovemoredomore says:

Alvin did you have a nightmare and dream up this stupid idea of putting an international airport on Anegada??? You are crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You just lost about 40 votes which is the total of my household.
