ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Scotiabank and the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) are now one step closer to deciding on a new mascot to represent the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Programme.
The two entities launched a regional search through a mascot drawing competition for kids in January 2011. Sarah Kite age 8 of Century House Montessori copped the top prize in the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Mascot Competition for British Virgin Islands. Ms. Kite won a Nintendo DS for her entry named “Iggy” the Iguana
Aiden George took the second prize and will collect an MP3 player while the third prize of a Scotiabank Gift Basket went to Malia Bryson. Mr. Aiden attends Ebenezer Thomas Primary School while Ms. Bryson is a student at Cedar International School.
The Kiddy Cricket Mascot Competition ran throughout the Caribbean from January 1 to February 18, 2011. The competition was launched to find the new ‘front man’ for the programme as the long standing mascot “Clarence the Crab” hangs up his costume and passes the torch over to a new fun loving cricket mascot.
Hundreds of entries were received and the exceptional artistic and creative talent of children across the BVI has definitely been realized.
WICB Kiddy Cricket Project Officer KJ Singh commented, “The entries have definitely exceeded our expectations in the artistic and creativity departments.”
“The competition also had a written component which was most inspiring as it demonstrated that kids are very much aware and knowledgeable of cricket. Overall this initiative has definitely achieved our goal of helping us find a new mascot and also energizing the kids for the upcoming 2011 programme.”
Meanwhile, Scotiabank’s regional sponsorships manager for the English Caribbean also expressed how pleased the Bank was with the smooth execution of the promotion and the entries received from the children. “The competition went really well and has helped to significantly lift awareness about the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Programme. It has given kids the opportunity not just participate for the chance to win a great prize, but gave them an avenue to play a real role in shaping the new direction of the programme. Their ideas will now inspire what the new mascot and the face of the programme turns out to be. Our children were truly delighted by the prizes and we look forward to the exciting regional selection process.”
A presentation event was held at the Scotiabank Road Town branch on Wednesday March 30, 2011 to present the exciting prizes to all the winners of the competition.
The judging for the regional segment of the competition has commenced and winner will be revealed by the end of the month.
Scotiabank and the WICB congratulate all the children who participated in competition from submitting impressive entries.
