Bria Smith uncoils big hit as Pythons win…again!
Bria Smith's runs secured win number 11 for the Pythons, 13-6 over the Hawks.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – For 6 ½ Innings all was calm on the ballfield, with the Hawks giving as good as they got against the Pythons. Then came the serene Bria Smith, who smashed the peace with a long, long, big hit (whatever Darier Malone may think!) to deep left field and a two run Homer to send the Pythons to a 13-6 victory.
It would have been so different if the Hawks’ Jheane Niles had caught up a pop up by Malone, but three fielders ended up looking at each other. Malone doubled and Sheniqua “Bam-Bam” Fahie, who had bunted to 1st to lead off the inning, made it home, to make it 9-6. Ivy Cameron-Fahie then singled and made 2nd as Khyra Powell was struck out by Elita Parker.
Jelissa “Shelley “Potter singled to right field as Malone and Cameron-Fahie reached home to make it 11-6. Bria Smith who had scored an unearned run and singled in her previous at bats, gracefully set up at the plate, looked up, held out her hand to let the umpire know she wasn’t quite ready, took a couple of practice swings and then unleashed her winning home run right over the fielder at deep left.
Potter was so impressed by her team mate she paused to look up at the ball as she ran from 2nd to 3rd, but with Smith bearing down on home plate soon took off running to also score.
Earlier the Hawks had applied constant pressure and had fought their way back into the game courtesy of a 4 run 3rd inning. Thea Cooke, Myrna Leonard and Niles were all walked the latter on a full count. Cooke got home on an error at 1st base. Niles was harshly, but fairly adjudged out as she tried to steal 2nd, but turned back and tagged by Cameron-Fahie. Shanika Forbes was also walked, before Shereen Hodge doubled past a diving Malone to bring Leonard and Forbes home. Parker was then caught comfortably in deep right by Karen Gonzalez, Judith Harrigan was walked and then following a pitching swap that brought Potter to the mound Hodge slid home to tie it all up at 5-5.
With a little more discipline at Bat and fewer errors the Hawks would have been reflecting on a win this morning. Instead they are contemplating what could have been.
The Pythons’ unbeaten stretch is now 11 in the league and despite the feeling they take the foot of the pedal early and relax too often, they have yet to be seriously tested this season. However they are the stuff Champions are made off and when they do face that challenge their skill and talent will undoubtedly see them through.
