35 young sailors sail away

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI –The Department of Youth Affairs and Sports/ BVI Watersports Centre 5th annual Regatta was a huge success on Saturday, December 11 as over 35 young sailors took to the waters from Sea Cows Bay accompanied by the Race Committee singing Christmas carols.
The light winds made for a great technical showcase of ability with tactical skills to the forefront. Sailors had to jostle for position at the start lines and also use all their ability to find wind and gain the edge during the races.
There were five classes in the Regatta with the youngest age group included under the banner of “Baby Greens.” This class proved such a success and was so well marshaled by Eben Myers and Danny Petrovic, that the BVIWSC will be making it an nnual feature from now on.
The other groups were mainly racing Pico’s and the recent HLSCC students, who passed an Royal Yacht Association Level 2 course, were given a good run for their money by sailors half their age and definitely have their size.
Special Olympic Sailors took to the Lasers with the feature of the division being a tussle between Delroy Gordon and Jaye Noel. A week ago Gordon had pipped Noel to the finish line at the Gustav Wilmerding Race in West End, this time Noel had his revenge, albeit via a little used tiebreaker ruling.
The day’s final race was called the “Blood Bath” and pitted all the boats up against each other. Seventeen boats all jostled for starting line honours, Pico’s, Optimists and Radials. Abayomi Maddox, sailing an Optimist, was eventually declared the winner.
The day’s sailing concluded with the Award Ceremony, with special handmade trophies from Green VI – a local non profit organisation.
Also new for 2010 was the Guy Eldridge perpetual Trophy, which will be given to the person that has shown the most dedication to giving back to the sport of Sailing at the BVIWSC. The trophy itself is has been created from a piece of timber saved from the wreck of the Tortola Sloop “Joyce L” built originally by Edward Frett.
The first winner of the award was Jaye Noel, Assistant RYA Instructor at the WSC.
