ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI ¬ – Persons living in the East End/Long Look community will have an opportunity to participate in two community health forums next week.

As part of the activities to celebrate Caribbean Wellness Day, the East End/Long Look Caribbean Wellness Day Committee is putting on the two health forums, one slated for Wednesday September 8 and the other on Thursday September 9.

Both forums will be graced by guest speakers who will present and discuss topics such as the life of a dialysis patient, practicing sobriety, chronic renal failure and the effects of a sedentary lifestyle.

The September 8 forum will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the vacant lot next to Fine Food Supermarket, Fat Hog’s Bay while the one on September 9 will also run from 7 to 9 p.m. but will be held in the parking lot across from the Iris Penn Clinic, East End.

Meanwhile, the activities for Caribbean Wellness Day, celebrated on Saturday September 11, will be held at the East End Long Look Community Center and is scheduled to begin at 4 a.m. The activities include pre-registration, stretching exercise, a walk to Beef Island, aerobics, and health screenings. Guest speakers include Lawyer Omonike Robinson-Pickering, topic: Surviving Breast Cancer; Sprinter and Deputy Director Disaster Management Zebalon Mclean, topic: The Effects of a Sedimentary Lifestyle; and Kenny Thomas, topic: Living With Kidney Failure.  Breakfast will be served.

Caribbean Wellness Day began in 2007, following a (CARICOM) Caribbean Community Heads of Government meeting held in Port of Spain, Trinidad.  The officials discussed ways to help stop chronic non communicable diseases, provide safe places for physical activities, and create smoke free environments. Now, Caribbean Wellness Day is observed annually on the second Saturday of September.

The East End/Long Look Caribbean Wellness Day Committee is looking for volunteers. Interested persons are kindly asked to contact Ms. Helen Frett at 1-284-541-1730 or hefrett@bvihsa.vg.
