ROADTOWN, Tortola, VI – Nineteen senior citizens of Anegada who were affected by the passage of Hurricane Earl are the beneficiaries of relief supplies donated by the BVI Humanitarian Relief Consortium (BVIHRC).

The donation which was a a c-ordinated effort among the BVIHRC, the Lions Club of Tortola and the Social Development Department on Anegada, saw the seniors receiving several relief items including  water, flashlights with batteries and medical kits on Monday.

Chairman of the BVIHRC Carvin Malone, 1st Vice Chairman Scottie Joseph and Secretary Annetta Williams delivered the supplies to the Road Town Dock around 3 p.m. on Monday which was then transported on the Road Town Fast Ferry free of cost, thanks to the ferry’s owner Albion “Bobby” Hodge.

Secretary of the BVIHRC Annetta Williams said they saw this as a perfect opportunity to assist in time of disaster.

“This is the purpose the Consortium was set up and it was good that we were able to start at home with the relief effort”, Williams said.

Williams is reminding all residents that this is peak of the hurricane season; they must not become complacent and continue to ensure their hurricane preparations are intact.

Hurricane Earl is the first tropical disturbance to hit the Virgin Islands for 2010. The eye of the hurricane passed closest to the island of Anegada, which received significant impact mainly to coastal resources and infrastructure.

The BVI Humanitarian Relief Consortium was formed January 2010 and its objectives are to meet the medium and long term need of Island Nations who have or may suffer from natural disasters and to identify regional and international organizations, (such as the International Red Cross, Lions Club International Foundation, HABITAT and UNICEF), through which the funds raised could be channeled to better meet the stated goals.

The consortium comprises Associations of BVI based Caribbean residents, Lions Club of Tortola and other service organizations such as BVI Red Cross and Capital Productions.
