ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A pickup truck carrying a large quantity of gravel and sand overturned between the road and the retaining wall that is being constructed at Great Mountain road, but luckily no one was injured. The incident occurred around 12 noon today Friday, July 15, 2011.

When VINO visited the scene a little before 1 pm, police officers and curious onlookers were astonished that the driver escaped unscathed.

The driver, who wished not be identified, briefly told VINO that he was going up the hill when the vehicle apparently malfunction. “I don’t want to say anymore. Everything is safe.”

A traffic officer added that driver may have experienced some difficulty and hit another vehicle before going in the road that was dug up. When asked if the driver may be charged, the officer did not respond.

Meanwhile, Fifth District Representative Elvin Harrigan was also at the scene and told VINO while some may be of the view that the road should be closed in its entirety, he believes it should only be closed when the men are working.

“You have to understand it is a road that is traversed daily. It is the main road that goes up to Fahie Hill, Brewers Bay…it would be difficult to close for 24 hours. But I would also like to encourage the motoring public to please be careful when you are driving around this area. A number of areas have been damaged by the rains and we are not going to get to them all at once so be careful when you are on the roads,” he added.

The truck has since been removed by an excavator.
