ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Using the proactive approach to counteract the overwhelming demand for admission into the public schools, Government through the Ministry of Education will seek to introduce a formal school admission policy next year, which will centralise the process.
This was disclosed by His Excellency the Governor, William Boyd McCleary during his first speech from the Throne delivered in the House of Assembly on Thursday, October 21, 2010.
“Further amendments to the Education Act will be necessary as this will assist the Ministry of Education and Culture in determining the needs of all schools on a long-term basis, so that plans for human resource recruitment, infrastructure development and material procurement can be completed in advance of the start of each school year,” Governor Mc Cleary said.
In September, Minister for Education and Culture Andrew Fahie admitted that for the 2010/2011 academic term the Education Department was inundated with applications for entrance into public schools.
In light of this, registration was halted for about one week, but eventually the admission issue was resolved.
Other education policies outlined by the Governor during his speech from the Throne for 2011 included the drafting of legislation for early childhood education, and policies governing sports and the youth.
“Mr. Speaker it is envisaged that these pieces of legislation will be brought before this Honourable House by the end of the second quarter of next year,” Governor McCleary added.
Furthermore, with the foundation already laid for several pieces of legislation to deal with youth development, the Governor pointed out that areas such as accreditation, curfew, special education needs and the reform of technical and vocational education will be covered.
Additionally, Government will seek to introduce a legislative framework in support of the establishment of medical schools in the Territory to enable the operation and regulation of such institutions. The proposed legislation will be tabled in the House by first quarter of next year.
