East End/Long Look emancipation extravaganza!
Majorettes at East End/Long Look festival parade Wednesday afternoon.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – About 20 vibrant, colourful cultural troupes and floats took part in the festival parade around East End/Long Look and onto the Limping Jack Cultureville this afternoon and the rain did little to dampen the excitement of what was truly a celebration of emancipation.
As usual, “Limping Jack” was there on a wooden framed float, showcasing the virtues, skills and culture of our ancestors with handmade banjos, fish pots and wooden toys for children.
Miss BVI, Sheroma Hodge, was there, looking as glamourous as when she was first crowned on Sunday night. Miss Virgin Gorda was also there. “It’s great”, she said, “good turnout despite the rain earlier.”
7th District Representative Dr. the Honourable Kedrick Pickering, on his bicycle, was also enjoying the parade. “So far so good!” he said.
35 majorettes from St Thomas also took part and were excited to be involved. “It’s our 5th anniversary,” said the organizer, “and what better way to celebrate than to join the party!”
Unicyclists and jugglers came all the way from New York to take part. “It’s a little hot out here for us!” they commented.
Mr. Smith showcased the treasures of the BVI with his troupe and the East End parade was certainly a fitting occasion for their appearance. The skydancers looked splendid in the purple and blue uniforms, the Unity Crew troupe and Delta Petroleum with their “shipwreck” theme rounded off the parade in some style.
