ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Two young men, Denrick Thomas and Shaquil Samuel, were the valedictorian and salutatorian respectively of the Territory’s Technical and Vocational Institute’s graduating class of 2011.

At yesterday’s ceremony held at the New Testament Church of God in Baughers Bay, the 15 students beamed with pride as they collected their certificates.

In his remarks to the graduates Mr. Thomas, who graduated in Electronics, told his fellow students that they are now ready to venture into the world to hone their skills. He also thanked his parents and teachers for believing in him.

Meanwhile, Minister for Education and Culture, Andrew Fahie, in his congratulatory message said “doing nothing is not an option”.

He told them in today’s world the need for plumbers and electricians are in demand, therefore the skills that they have should not be something to be ashamed of. This was the sentiment also expressed by At Large Representative Vernon Malone.

“Technical education is equally important for building a nation,” he added.

The keynote speaker was Melvin Turnbull Jnr who admitted that he was not the brightest student in the bunch. He told the students that his grades were so poor his mother threatened to pull him out from the then BVI High School. He was in Third Form at the time.

Instead, he begged to go to the United States and with focus he was able to graduate. The now successful businessman challenged the graduates to “don’t look at where you were, look at where you are now”.

The institute’s principal Clifton Forbes also gave brief remarks.

The class of 2011 include: Travis George who graduated in Air Condition and Refrigeration; Shanique Samuel and Shauima Samuel in Cosmetology; Nevron Anderson, Jesse Edwards, Travis Gumbs, Glen Hodge, Roland Nobrega and Shaquil Samuel – Electronics; Nadia Harris and Nichole McLean Thompson graduated in Garment Construction; while Vidal Dickson and Branson now hold Small Engine certificates. Delroy Gordon received a certificate in Visual Arts.

I am pleased to read from Athens the achievements of the graduates from BVITVI. Perhaps I should point out the reason for Delroy Gordon not being in the group photo? He is currently representing his country in the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece where I am sending greetings from. He is currently leading his class…
