2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season opens with below-normal forecast

FREDERIKSTED, St Croix, USVI- The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season began on Monday, June 1, 2026, with forecasters calling for a quieter-than-usual year, but federal and university outlooks continue to stress a point familiar to the Caribbean and the U.S. Virgin Islands: even a below-normal season can produce one storm capable of changing lives, damaging infrastructure and disrupting entire communities.
Tropical wave in Atlantic could be the next named storm- DDM
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has said it continues to monitor a tropical wave in the Atlantic that could possibly be the next named storm of the season.
Erin becomes 1st hurricane of 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Erin, the fifth named storm, becomes the first hurricane in the Atlantic Basin of the 2025 hurricane season.
Low pressure area in Atlantic being monitored
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- In a few days, a low pressure area could form in the central portion of the Tropical Atlantic, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has reported.
Brief cloudiness & showers across VI today- DDM
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Shallow cloud patches and pockets of moisture will support brief cloudiness and showers across the Leeward Islands and [British] Virgin Islands over the next twenty four hours.
DDM forecasts increased showers for today
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A frontal trough interacting with a deep layered trough will significantly increase the chances for shower and thunderstorm activity across the area during the next 24 hours.
Mostly partly sunny skies today but increased chances of showers tonight- DDM
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Relatively stable conditions will prevail across the area today, January 28, 2024, however, by tonight a weak strike will move into the area and gradually increase the chances of rain activity on and around the islands during that time.
Lee still expected to pass well north of VI; Now a Cat 2 storm
MIAMI, Florida, USA- According to the National Hurricane Center’s 11:00 AM advisory on Sunday, September 10, 2023, Category 2 Hurricane Lee is 270 miles north-northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands, with maximum sustained wind of 110 mph.
60% chance of brief passing showers today- DDM
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Humidity and instability associated with the passing of a tropical wave could trigger some rainfall in the Virgin Islands today, Friday, July 28, 2023.
'A few showers' expected across VI today & tonight- DDM
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A weak tropical wave approaching from the East will generate a few showers across the area later today and tonight, July 16, 2023, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has said.
