We are all created equal

Lorna M. George

As I grew up in the [British] Virgin Islands many years ago, the norm of the day was to look down one’s nose on another based on his/her family background. Sad to say our parents and many persons of the day they not know better. Of course, we all drink and eat through our mouths and use the bathroom through our anus; however, it is hard to come to the light when we are surrounded with utter darkness.

Wrong cannot conquer right

Lorna M. George

When I graduated in 1984 and returned to Peebles Hospital to work, my stay there only lasted four months. As a result of my Christian values and my love for people I could not get involved in the wrong things I saw happening there. I refused to do what they wanted me to do. No one can make me do what is wrong. If my conscience condemns me I am not going to do it. I abhor wrong.

Love is as strong as death

By Lorna M. George

At the Royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on May 19, 2018, the most Reverend Michael Curry, said, “when love is the way, no child would go to bed hungry; when love is the way, we will let justice roll down like a mighty stream and righteousness like an ever flowing brook; when love is the way, poverty will be no more; when love is the way, we will treat each other, well, like family; when love is the way, we will know that God is the source of us all, and we are brothers and

We are created equal!

There is an old adage that says, “Where ignorance is bliss, it is folly to be wise”

While I was growing up in the British Virgin Islands, one of the most ungodly things that I witnessed was people looking down their noses on each other based on whom his/her parents were. This was done to keep people in their so call “PLACE”.

ONE CARIBBEAN PEOPLE

By Lorna M. George

We are one Caribbean people. It does not matter in which West Indian island we were born, be it Cuba, Antigua, Nevis or St. Vincent, we are brothers and sisters in the Lord. We share a common heritage.

We must learn to live like brothers or perish together as fools

Lorna M. George

The above quote by Dr Martin Luther King Jr is so true. There was a murder committed in my village of Long Look the other day. My heart goes out to the family of the victim. We are destroying ourselves because of the hate, bitterness and hostility in our souls. Our society is saturated with hate and as result it is manifesting its ugly face as the violence we are seeing today.

We must love each other

Lorna M. George

When I attended College of the Virgin Islands, now called the University of the Virgin Islands, I had a white Chemistry professor who not only taught me in the classroom but also patiently tutored and coached me in Chemistry during office hours.

God is the axis of the VI

Lorna M. George

While a student at Tuskegee University in Alabama USA, one morning I was sitting at the table in the cafeteria with some young men from the other Caribbean islands having breakfast. A young Jamaican man beaming with pride declared that Jamaica is the axis of the Caribbean. Without missing a beat, I shouted back, “Jamaica may be the axis of the other Caribbean islands, but God is the axis to the [British] Virgin Islands.”
