Really Uptown, the speed demon, lives up to his name! [Photoslide Included]
These were the bold words uttered by Letty Hodge, the owner of Really Uptown, moments after the five year-old gelding upstaged two time Governor’s Cup winner Good Prospecting and Bud White, 1st leg winner of the Triple Crown, to win the feature race in a time of 1:29:1 from “wire to wire” yesterday afternoon, June 3, 2012 at the Ellis Thomas Downs Racetrack.
Prior to the seven furlong race, which carried a hefty purse of $10,000, Virgin Islands News Online spoke with several fans on the track and the general consensus was Really Uptown had the edge because of the short distance.
The gelding won by about two horse lengths, while Good Prospecting and Bud White galloped in second and third places respectively. Sweet Sight out of St. Thomas was fourth.
Mrs. Hodge also disclosed that her horse will not compete in races over one mile.
Out of the five races for the Diamond Jubilee event, Tortola won three. Blood in the Sand got the ball rolling to win the first race in 1:28:2, he was followed by Rey Miestro Jnr., Power Ten and Ten Storm out of St. Thomas in the 6 ½ furlong race.
However, St. Thomas’ Dashing Pirate copped the second race in 1:33:2. The seven furlong race saw All Country running in second; Mr. Gold Prospect (STT) third; Gaffalione fourth; Queteparce Cholito fifth and Ease My Mind sixth.
Race three was a nail biting one, and started with Good Evening Officer out of St. Thomas leading for most of the seven furlong race, but with about one furlong to go, Out of Wine overpowered the filly to win in 1:31:3. Glorious Memory was third.
Last but not least, Twisted Dreams (STT) wrapped up the last race of the day, which was one mile, in 1:47:1. News Carrier (STT) came in second; Northern Pike third; Square One fourth and Voice of Faith fifth.
A sizable crowd turned up for the races, and several elected officials were spotted in the crowd including Minister for Health and Social Development Hon. Ronnie Skelton; Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron Walwyn and At Large Representative Hon. Archibald Christian.
Aaron the Jedi and Showtime Band provided entertainment.
