VINO responds to Governor’s statement over cartoon

Governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert labeled the VINO cartoon as 'grossly offensive' but is now being criticised for being silent during the uproar globally on the killing of African-American George P. Floyd Jr by a white police officer. Photo: VINO/File
Amid public criticism, VINO has maintain its cartoon was not intended to trivialise the Black Lives Matter cause, noting that the facts do not support the claims of critics. Photo: VINO

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- We find it curious and questionable that a Sitting Governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert has the time to comment about a cartoon (free speech satire) that has already been explained and the matter closed.

Mr Jaspert claimed that the cartoon was “grossly offensive”; however, after the recent murder in the United States of George P. Floyd Jr and more recently Rayshard Brooks, he did not find the same time and courage to release a statement condemning the murder of blacks in the USA by racist police mobs.

We take it that the good Governor was also outraged, but did not get around to a public position via a statement!

Be consistent

It is not our role to judge Mr Jaspert or pronounce on his motive; however, we never heard a statement when young blacks were tased a few months ago by local police or even the result of the investigations, but the Governor found time to get into the conversation over a cartoon. Should we conclude that he cares about Black Lives Matter issues?

His alleged disrespect and unprofessional behaviour against some of our leaders may need a statement, but we will leave that to his good conscience.

We trust the Governor will use the time remaining in the Virgin Islands to help fight racism and all forms of discrimination in many private sector businesses and many industries, and truly let actions speak louder than words.

    1. white Director of public prosecution
    2. white Governor
    3. white commissioner

all entered under the National Democratic political party

Families in this Overseas Territory have lost love ones at the hands of criminal conduct however no public comments from none of the 3 systems above

it is alleged that 50,000.00 per persons were given to someones to deal with the cold case files: nothing!!!!!!

    help me Abraham
there was once a formal drug squad the day after persons went to rob that yacht in the east the rapid response unit was formed

we use to have frequent stop search especially on horse race day in this territory that went off the drawing board because non-blacks were search so mr morris pulled that operations

Why this cartoon is getting so much attention, look at how many other questionable cartoons VINO has done and didn't get all that attention especially during the last elections. We need to stop being hypocritical, especially--- see...see..tea

It is time we started naming people and businesses with racist practices, we see them, but we don't name them. It's time we put a list together hit them in their wallets and put faces and names out in the public. to much hiding in the BVI.

White privilege was read loud and clear in the governor's statement. Very solid come back VINO. The best of some you house slave-minded people is to silence the ones who bold enough to draw attention to an issue. Shame on c-t, and others shame on political aspirants, shame on who see magistrate sister died with injustice.

you are not sure why he comments on things happening in the country he is in and why he does not comment on things that are happening in another country? One would think that is quite obvious.
