8 years jail for Trini man who raped friend’s stepdaughter

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Security guard Andre Stedman, the 56-year-old Trinidadian accused of raping his friend’s stepdaughter about two years ago, has been sentenced to 8 years imprisonment at Her Majesty’s Prison in Balsam Ghut, Tortola.

Stedman was sentenced today, July 12, 2019 in the High Court of the Virgin Islands.

He was also handed a 1 year prison sentence for indecent assault. Both sentences are to run concurrently (at the same time).

The sentences are to begin from the time Stedman was placed on remand, which is since February 19, 2019.

Background

The court had heard that the incident occurred during a visit to Stedman’s friend's home.

The two men first watched television while the friend's step-daughter, a child under the age of 13, stayed in her room. After a while, the step-father went to bed and Stedman remained on the couch.

Prosecutors said the child awoke during the night to find Stedman on top of her and had penetrated her.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force was called and Stedman was arrested and charged.

      If you know anything about sentencing you will know that the judge had to look at local and regional precedents and give him credit for his good character.
