ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Youth of the Virgin Islands are set to play an integral role in the quest to enhance and preserve the appearance of the Virgin Islands as government embarks on a more aggressive path of increasing education and heightening awareness in this regard.

Territorial At-Large Representative Hon. Archibald C. Christian made this disclosure during a press conference held earlier today, November 27, 2012 at the BVI Tourist Board to provide an overview of government’s ongoing ‘BVI You’re Beautiful Keep It Clean Campaign’. The initiative is in collaboration with the BVI Tourist Board and other agencies.

Hon. Christian stated, “We have decided to engage the youths of the Territory in this campaign as we feel that they are the ones that strive to benefit from a clean and beautiful BVI when we leave it for them and their generations to enjoy.”

He revealed that a number of students from schools such as the Bregado Flax Educational Centre as well as a number of other persons from around the Territory have been involved in the campaigns.

The campaign, he further noted, was in effect to bring public awareness about the litter and the actions that many residents contribute towards debris and waste in the Territory.

Hon. Christian also related that the campaign includes a range of educational resources as well as various media approaches, which include advertisements on radio, television, social media, posters, in addition to a kid’s activity booklet. “Educating the public is an ongoing exercise, we have to constantly be bringing awareness to people about the problem and the issues with respect to waste management.”

One of the proposed television advertisements will be about a number of school children involved in a clean-up exercise. Hon. Christian explained, “youngsters have been used specifically because that’s the next generation that will inherit whatever we do in terms of waste management in the BVI.”

One particular concern raised was the issue of litter wardens and their level of effectiveness. Hon. Christian revealed that the litter warden programme was being reviewed since “the cohort” of litter wardens that were sent out approximately two years ago had experienced some challenges. “They met with some resistance,” he said, “so the litter wardens are basically… concerned about the way persons have been responding to the way they function.”

Yes, the NDP should find more for Archie to do, as he has a lot to contribute.
Unfortunately, the VIP didn't find something for the three stooges to do and as such makes all future at-large candidates without a ministerial portfolio, look like a waste of space.
