ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Elodie Sadena "Sadie" Winter was remembered today, April 27, 2013 in a Thanksgiving Service attended by many at the St George’s Episcopal (Anglican) Church in Road Town.

The former Festival Queen (now referred to as Miss BVI) and Miss Universe 1967 contestant died at a Puerto Rico Hospital on April 21, 2013.

She was 63 years of age at the time of her death.

She will be interred at the St George’s Episcopal (Anglican) Church Graveyard following the service.

The former pageant queen was fondly remembered for her unique personality, strength, sense of humour and determination. Her special friend, Kather Smith, recalled that she was always ‘positive and full of life’. It was a shared memory by many who offered tributes.

According to another friend, Judith Charles, Sargeant-Winter showed great resilience following the deaths of two of her children. Following several bouts of illness, which resulted in her becoming blind, Charles said her “memory and sense of touch were doubled.”

The funeral service was attended by many and there were several tributes in her honour. Among those in attendance were Members of the House of Assembly including Premier Dr The Hon. D. Orlando Smith, Deputy Premier Dr The Hon. Kedrick D. Pickering, Minister for Health and Social Development Hon. Ronnie W. Skelton, Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron V. Walwyn and Hon. Archibald C. Christian.

Sargeant-Winter, also formerly a Customs Officer and Ranger Guide, is survived by her brother Winfeild Sargeant, sister Esmie Nibbs, three sons Shane, Craig and Darren and numerous other relatives and friends.

The eulogy was read by one of her grandchildren, Shayne Winter, while readings were done by her grandson Steven Winter and special friend, Kather Smith.

The service was led by Reverends Sandra Malone and Esther Georges.

Former festival queen Elodie Sadena "Sadie" Winter has died

- she was one of the early queens to represent the VI at Miss Universe pageant

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Word just reaching this news site is that former Festival Queen (now referred to as Miss BVI) Mrs Elodie Sadena "Sadie" Winterdied early this morning April 21, 2013 at a Puerto Rico hospital.

She was 63 years of age.

The cause of her passing is unknown, however, she has been sick for some time, according to a family spokesman.

Mrs Sargeant-Winter, before her eyesight declined and was declared legally blind, worked in banking and was a customs officer.

The former beauty queen is survived by three sons; Shane, Darren and Craig Winter. Mrs Winter was one of the early ladies to represent the Virgin Islands at the prestigious Miss Universe pageant in 1967, the same year she was crowned the Virgin Islands Festival Queen.

After her 1967 appearance at the Miss Universe pageant, which took place in Miami Beach, Florida, USA, the Virgin Islands had taken a long layoff for about 9 years before returning to the show.

Mrs Sargeant-Winter was said to have been a crowd favourite at the show and made the Virgin Islands very proud with her performance.

The Board of Directors, Management and Staff of Virgin Islands News Online express our sympathy to the family of the deceased.

Can't imagine competing in such a show in those dull dark years when racisim was at its peak. She must have been a very strong woman. Rest well my sister and may the boys be comforted in this their time of loss.

I met this bubbly lady while she was enroute to PR on the ferry with her family. What a memorable experience. I prayed hard for your recovery. I must say you were full of life and although I only knew you for such a brief period, your personality left an indelible mark on my life. I was so looking forward to seeing you again. If I had to help throw those bags off the ferry so you can catch your flight, I would. Sincerest condolences to the family and may your beautiful soul rest in peace.
