Announcement finally made by Minister Walwyn

Paraquita Bay, Tortola, VI - Well known throughout the Virgin Islands for our accurate and factual reporting and always having the inside scoops that no other sites have, Virgin Islands News Online first reported in June of this year that Wade W. Tobin was tipped to take up the position of Acting Principal of the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) come fall 2012.

Even though many senior officials in the Ministry and Department of Education denied this at the time, official word came that this news site’s report was factual as usual!

Minister for Education and Culture Myron V. Walwyn made the announcement yesterday, August 27, 2012 during a meeting with the Territory’s Public School teachers dubbed as Professional Day for Educators, held at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium.

"Today I would like to formally announce that Mr. Wade Tobin will now be taking over the leadership of our largest secondary school, the Elmore Stoutt High School. As you all know, Ms. Melissa Amey, Principal of the school is currently on study leave," Hon. Myron V.Walwyn, Minister for Education and Culture stated.

The Minister said he believes that Mr. Tobin will make a positive contribution to the education system in his new role.

In our original report in June 2012, this news site’s well placed sources within the ruling National Democratic Party Government and team of reporters, informed us that Principal of ESHS Ms. Melissa Amey, is expected to return to University to finalise her Master’s Degree. It is unclear for how long but the area of studies is reported to be Human Resources. While Principal Amey is on study leave, former ESHS teacher and current Principal of one of the Virgin Islands’ private schools, Wade W. Tobin, is expected to act as Principal.

Melissa Amey Profile

According to the H. L. Stoutt Community College, in their alumni profile, Amey grew up in New York where she completed elementary school, as well as her early years of high school. Her later years of high school were completed at Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. She holds an Associate’s Degree in Elementary Education, as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Lander University, South Carolina. Ms. Amey is currently pursuing a double Master’s in Human Resources Management and Human Resources Development at Webster University, also in South Carolina.

Since 1989, Ms. Amey has been teaching for over 17 years in the Virgin Islands, a period interrupted only by her attendance at Lander University. She has served variously at Leonora Delville, Althea Scatliffe, and Enis Adams Primary Schools, as well as the Elmore Stoutt High School.

She has been Acting Principal at Elmore Stoutt High School since September 2009 and has been confirmed to the post in 2011. Ms. Amey, who also had a stint at Job Developer, GLEAMNS Human Resources, a South Carolina company, (2002-2004) is the daughter of Mrs. Antoinette Skelton, the Executive Director of the BVI Social Security Board.

Wade W. Tobin Profile

Mr. Tobin, the current Principal of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) elementary and secondary schools, has been teaching for over 23 years. He spent 19 years in the public service as a teacher and taught at several public schools on Tortola before moving on to his current employment.

After graduating from the then BVI High School now Elmore Stoutt High School in 1990, Tobin landed his first job as a Class Three Teacher at the Enis Adams Primary where he spent a year from 1990 to 1991, before taking up a Class Four Teacher position at the Althea Scatliffe Primary, from 1991 to 1993.

He then moved on to the Ivan Dawson Primary and stayed there from 1993 to 1997 before his final employment in the public service at the Elmore Stoutt High School from 2001 to 2007 as Year Head/Teacher of History and Social Studies.

Mr. Tobin earned an Associate’s Degree in Teaching from the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in 1996, and went on to pursue higher teaching education at the University of the Virgin Islands where he obtained his Bachelor’s in Social Sciences/Secondary Teachers Preparation in 2001 and finally in 2004 a Master’s in Education Administration from the same institution.

Wade W. Tobin is the brother of Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communications and Works, Julian Willock.

why is this breaking news! There has been no shake up! I can tell you that this decision was one made by Ms Amey so it was certainly not political! everything is political for you people! anyway, Ms Amey you did well for the ESHS and I for one am glad that you have decided to complete your studies. I do hope that you do return after you are finished. I hope that Mr Tobin go in there and do his job which is looking out for OUR children and ensuring that they get the best possible education. This is no time for half stepping because this generation, especially our boys, requires strong, stern, male leadership. Afterall that is the role that God mandated for them. To be the leaders! There are a lot of teachers in all our schools, especially our Public Schools, who do not genuinely care about our children and something seriously needs to be done about them too. Ms Amey, study hard and we wish you well!

I agree there was no need for breaking news like that. Everyone knew she was going on study leave. It is not like they asked her to leave. Stop it VINO. I congratulate your brother and I hope that he can coach his team to a winning year. First thing he would need to do is change the culture in the school among his faculty. He have to first show them with tough love that he care for them. Once he do that he would have a successful school year. If he fail in that department he will catch it up on that campus both from faculty and students. I expect to hear good things about Tobin.

Farewell, for now, Ms Amey.. As a parent I think you did a great job (and I know the critics - especially some teachers will be saying 'you didnt work with her, so you dont know'), but whatever man! I interacted with her as a parent and found her to be very professional; I attended PTA meetings and loved her governance; plus my children also think she was a good principal...so there. I also happen to think Wade will be a good principal and pray him well. After all, it's the students who will suffer if he isn't.

Historically the BVI High school has produced the leaders of our country. Both the government and the parents need to stand with teachers and Mr. Tobin on education issues for the good of our students.

While this is deemed a good move for ESHS, I hope the powers that be at the SDA school as well as the Minister of Education is concerned about the Private school's interest because at the end of the day is should be all about education. So I hope they have begun looking for good replacement. Mr. Tobin definitely took that school to another level and need it needs to progress in that upward motion. All the best Mr. Tobin, make us proud.

I must say that Ms. Amey has done an outstanding job with the children at ESHS. She has a sincere love and appreciation for the children and encouraged them to excel in higher education… Some may disagree but we must give high praise to teachers and principals who put a lot of energy and time to make sure that our boys excel academically. I wish her continued success in her future endeavors. I also think that the government has made a superb choice to continue the great work at ESHS. Mr. Tobin is a great man, a disciplinarian, honest and a no-nonsense man. Most of all he is a man of God. I have seen over the years the hard work he has put into the Seventh-day Adventist School, and have noticed that since he has been there the school is ranking, so I am not at the least that the great work will continue at ESHS. I am positive things will be greater! Congrats to you brother of the soil.. Be humble, keep a level eye and put God first in all you do.

Let's not forget our girls. They need our encouragement as well. Lately we all seem to be so focussed on the boys that the achievements of our girls seem to be going unnoticed.

Mr. Tobin, you will surely be missed from the SDA Church. They will not be able to find anyone to replace you. You tried to help everyone. I hope that you have left manners with some of those teachers because they neeed it. I wish that God will bless you in your next job. I have no doubt that you will do well.

Ms. Amey was and is well-respected by the students and parents of ESHS. She did a wonderful job while she was there, so dont make it look like she got the position because of who her mother is. You people like too much drama. Good luck in your studies, Ms. Amey. We love you and look forward to welcoming you back in the BVI on the completion of your studies

Miss F***h MP it is only because of who her mother is why she got the position, that and that alone. She cant lead a fly much less ESHS. She knows how to capture the kids but it takes a whole lot more than that to run ESHS.
