UPDATE – Fly baits put on JVD, dumpsite to be cleared
On NDP Radio programme aired on July 16, 2012 on a local radio station, a caller, who said he was from Jost Van Dyke, revealed the situation where he said garbage on the island is reportedly piled up and overflowing and alleged that some businesses on the island were unable to sell food on July 16, 2012 due to excessive flies.
According to a Government release, it states that the Department of Solid Waste received a report on July 16, about the accumulated garbage in Little Harbor and White Bay and which resulted in a fly outbreak on the island which affected the community, especially restaurant owners.
It further stated that Manager of the Department of Waste Management, Mr. Anslem Myers travelled to Jost Van Dyke and investigated the reports. “Six cases of fly bait have been sent to the island. This bait will be placed around the bins and given to restaurant owners.” Additionally, the dumpsite will be cleared, the release stated.
The Ministry said it regret the inconvenienced caused to the JVD community and assured that measures are being implemented to prevent future reoccurrences.
Meanwhile, the caller who brought the attention to the Minister had also claimed that there is no heavy equipment machinery on the island, as usually an excavator is used to over the garbage at the dump site but, “they ain’t doing nothing and it that bad”.
“It’s really really bad for our health, the garbage has not been dealt with properly in the past five months,” the caller further charged.
Minister Skelton had explained that on the island they were making “arrangements” to see if they could have stopped open burning but it was not their intention to have the situation as the caller revealed.
