Aristotle, the famous Greek Philosopher once said, “Those who educate children well are more to be honoured than they who produce them; for these only gave them life, those, the art of living well.”

It is with this thought in mind, that we proudly present our Young Professional for this week, a charismatic and thoughtful young educator, Monel T.P. Marcellin.

Presently a teacher at the Primary level of Bregado Flax Educational Centre in Virgin Gorda, Monel said though she has only recently started her journey in the teaching profession, she had always known that this was what she would be doing and this was despite her passion for the subject of Biology.

“I always wanted to be a teacher, I never pictured myself doing anything different,” said the young educator who was raised in Virgin Gorda.

Monel graduated with honours from Bregado Flax Educational Centre, coming first in Accounts, Biology and Office Administration in the high school leaving exams and received a scholarship for her achievement. She was also successful in completing eight subjects at CXC.

Our Young Professional said plans to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education at the University of the Virgin Islands in the very near future after recently finishing her stint at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) where she graduated with further honours (Cum Laude) with an Associate’s degree in Teacher Education.

One of her current passionate pursuits is her involvement in the Valley Sound Lions Club. She is also a volunteer contributor to the annual Virgin Gorda Easter Festival through her involvement in one of the troupes.

She cited veteran teacher and former principal Gracia Stevens as a key source of inspiration for her career choice. Monel described Principal Stevens, who also served as her Class Five teacher, as her favourite teacher over her years of schooling.

A critical lesson she explained that was handed down by Ms Stevens was that of love. “What I learned from her was, regardless of who a child or individual is, you just have to show that child love. You teach them by showing them love. That’s how she got the information across to me, because she loved us so much she made us care about ourselves.”

Twenty-year-old Monel, who is essentially the baby in her family, previously worked as a Waitress during her studies at HLSCC to assist with offsetting her expenses.

Currently a Grade One Teacher, Monel expressed that while the classroom setting could be a bit challenging at times, it was the children that made it all the more special and allow you to forget about your surroundings.

Though she feels that teaching younger children helps her to develop a certain type of love that she didn’t know previously, her hope is to one day be able to teach older students at the primary level.

“You get to love them as if they’re your own children… although I prefer to teach the older kids, the younger kids are the ones that put a smile on my face when I walk into the school and give you the little hugs and stuff…” she said.

What she has already been touched by and found heart-warming and reassuring, is the presence of fathers among those turning up to support their children on the first day of the new school term. “To me, this is something that you don’t see frequently so I guess this kind of stood out,” she said.

Monel expressed gratitude for the support shown by her parents throughout, “They were there for me and they’re still here for me and I’m grateful to know that I have both of them to lean on,” she said “… I don’t know what I would do without either of them.”

The young teacher urged that youths be careful in choosing their friends and that they select positive persons to be around them and try to remain positive in whatever they do. “Always look for the positive in any bad situation,” she advised.

Monel also encouraged youth to get involved and try to take part in things that help to build their community. She feels that this would allow the youth to develop a sense of pride and become well rounded persons.

She also encouraged youth to travel and broaden their horizons, giving themselves an opportunity to see what the rest of the world has to offer and understand that there is so much more that they can do.
