Runway expansion: “No physical impact to Bellamy Cay” – Hon. Pickering

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Bellamy Cay, an island that houses the Last Resort, will not be physically impacted by the Territory’s airport expansion, announced Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, Dr. Kedrick Pickering on NDP Radio last evening, June 18, 2012.

He was at the time responding to a question posed by the programme’s host Eileene Parsons on whether or not Bellamy Cay would be “obliterated”.

"From what I know, with respect to the development, it will have no physical impact on Bellamy Cay. What we do not know [is] from an aeronautical point of view what effects it may have on the operations of the business on Bellamy Cay that we don't know because that would be a decision that would be taken by the aeronautical experts as to exactly whether business is likely to impair flight plans etc, etc. Those are highly technical issues that are outside of our control, but the physical island as far as I am aware, there will be no physical impact on the physical island," the Minister said.

Hon. Pickering, who is also the Deputy Premier, made it known that the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport project is moving forward, and noted that its Project Manager Winston Wilson is settling in.

"We are putting the pieces together. We have received the initial copy of the environmental impact assessment and we are presently reviewing that document to see what the implications for the project going forward are. We are also preparing a document to send out for tendering, which is a phase of which we are inviting people who are interested in being a part of the project to declare their interest in the project," he added.

Furthermore, the Natural Resources and Labour Minister revealed that his Ministry will be keeping the public informed through a proper public relations programme that “would feed the information to the public on a regular basis as to the developments as they unfold and to the implications as decisions are made.”
