WEST END, Tortola, VI- The United Kingdom (UK) navy vessel, HMS Medway, has returned to the Virgin Islands to assist with border security, even though against the wishes of the Virgin Islands Government who had insisted that the UK’s assistance could have been channeled to another aspect of border surveillance.

The vessel was seen in the Sir Francis Drake Channel in the Cox Heath area this morning, September 30, 2020.

The HMS Medway is a British Royal Navy patrol ship, designed for counter-piracy, anti-smuggling, fishery protection and border patrol.

According to the Governor’s Office, the vessel will remain in the Territory until the end of October and work alongside the RVI Police Force and other members of the Joint Task Force to support patrols and temporary radar arrangements in place.

Embattled outgoing Governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert, who has been under strong criticisms for his insensitive comments about slavery reparations and the preserving of names of landmarks in honour of persons who perpetrated slavery and evil acts against inhabitants of the Caribbean, has acknowledged that his insistence to bring the UK navy to patrol the VI borders were against the will of the people of the VI to handle their own affairs.

Consult with the people's elecetd Gov't- Premier to UK

Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has since written a letter to the Minister for Overseas Territories and Sustainable Development, Baroness Elizabeth G. Sugg over Governor Jaspert’s high-handedness and alleged attempts to cause injury between the elected Government and its people as well as the VI and UK relationship.

In the letter, which has since been leaked to the local media, Premier Fahie told Baroness Sugg that in the interest of salvaging what is left of the relationship between the respective Governments after the havoc that has been wreaked by Governor Jaspert, especially over the past month, "you would agree that before any further steps are taken to position the UK Military in BVI waters to support the current border protection strategy, it is prudent that you should consult with the people's elected Government."

It is unclear whether the UK has met that request before dispatching the HMS Medway to VI waters.

I wonder and I want someone to explain to me: are we independent? We are under the U.K. flag, we are bound in what? I use the U.K. passport. can't U.K. doing nothing here has no voice and votes, since I have known as a child we have a governor and because we have one. You need to tell him to leave and not someone else to come. I don't understand Blas Blas. If it is as I notice and the relationship with the U.K. is no longer wanted. This is done diplomatically and a letter is not written in secret because as a citizen I want to know and I can decide and not a small group

      Why?
      1) why are so many seemingly falling for the thinly-veiled bull being spouted about reminding us of history - the situation is in no way comparable and it urinates on the graves of those who suffered here to pretend it is.
      2) why exactly is it a problem that the Governor responding to a porous border, a standing joke for years and the reason we suffered the consequences of a further lockdown, by inviting a ship - which is already in the region in case of devastating hurricane (remember that - when we were desperate for law and order and the government was nowhere) - to station here as a free deterrent to foreign vessels engaged in illegal activity?
      3) why have we not heard anything about the US patrolling and enforcing the border?
      4) why would an honest and upstanding government make issue of free national security assistance?
      5) why, if we are to pretend the complaints have ANY merit at all, would the UK want to take responsibility for the BVI? If you think it’s $ and trade - they’d go for Cayman before even thinking about the BVI. Power? What on earth would it add? Not strategically or geopolitically significant. Difficult to get to and manage.
      6) why are we not talking about schools, infrastructure, tidying up the mess (not strumming random verges but picking up all the trash and discarded items) before tourists arrive, the decay of prime real estate at the hands of BVIIC holding us back, energy and food security, affordable housing for young BVIslanders and Belongers and hurricane shelters that can withstand a storm, expanding marine reserves and creating a sustainable fisheries plan to build back a fishing industry, internet poverty holding back education and entrepreneurs of the future?
Don’t we have a loyal opposition to push these things on a bipartisan basis for our futures?
No because remember some rich sugar families were bad hundreds of years ago. Yes, let’s look after some historical sites and educate tourists and our own with decent facilities. Then look at the now. Billions have passed through here in recent decades.... Very little to show for it.

I am glad the military ship is in the BVI. It gives me a sense of security. Hope the new Governor keep the military ship for six more months to patrol the borders.

only an ignorant, arrogant, and prideful commander will challenge a stronger power in a sword tug-a-war battle, knowing that the stronger power hold the handle, while he holds the blade. Room for good leadership is still to be filled in the B.V.I.

the head of police could be behinds this because with smith now dealing with the joint task force takes away some of powers: some of you think that only local violate laws but open your eyes not only local call here home we have salvage operations here aiding and abetting moving the white powder: it was smith who had enough balls to disrupt certain people operations while at customs now he back so miky not in favour at the end of the vessel is a plus for positive bvi people
