Glenn Harrigan to chair BVI Airports Authority Board
All airports in the Virgin Islands (Tortola-Terrence B. Lettsome International, Virgin Gorda-Taddy Bay Aerodrome and Anegada-Auguste George Airport) are run by the BVIAA, a statutory body which is governed by the BVIAA Act of 2004.
As accurately and firstly reported by Virgin Islands News Online, the subject of all airports has been removed from the Ministry of Communications and Works to the Minister for Natural Resources & Labour and Deputy Premier Hon. Kedrick Pickering, who also represents the 7th district. It is unclear why the transfer, but the paper was advanced to Cabinet by Minister Pickering, according to the same source.
With the demise of the local Civil Aviation Department some years ago, Air Safety Support International (ASSI), a UK based company, is now the local regulator of the Aviation Sector in the Virgin Islands (VI), while the BVIAA deals with the day to day operations of the airports.
It is still unclear how long ASSI will be in the VI as one of the claims was that there are allegedly no locals to take over this role. ASSI reports directly to the United Kingdom appointed Governor.
Mr. Harrigan, a prominent member of the BVI Investment Club, will take over from outgoing Chairman and businesswomen Mrs. Debra Romney-Hodge, the daughter of late Chief Minister Cyril B. Romney.
Mr. Harrigan, who was born in Anguilla but is a Belonger, runs his own business and is a Certified Chartered Accountant (CCP). He attended the University of the West Indies where he studied accounting, and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales.
