ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Family Support Network FSN will need at least $150,000 to effectively provide the service it does this year and FSN President Judith Charles has issued an urgent appeal for help.

FSN is an advocacy group for victims of domestic violence, a growing problem in the Territory. FSN, a non-profit organization, receives a subvention from Government, but depends largely on donations.

“Over the years, more and more persons are coming to the Family Support Network for assistance and we provide mainly counseling, food and shelter,” Charles said.

She recounted that from January to December 2013, 59 women, 12 men and 29 children came to FSN for assistance, while in 2014, those figures jumped to 145 females and 25 males. 29 children also received assistance in 2014. The FSN Director said they provided food to 282 families and in 2013 that cost $101,212.00.

“To provide those services to the 199 clients in 2014 meant that our office had to be open six days a week instead of five,” she stated. “If we base our projections for 2015 on just the number of new clients in 2014 alone, we would need at least $150,000 to run the office and provide services to clients.”

She said FSN urgently needs funds to cover expenses such as shelter, food, clothing, salaries, social security, payroll taxes, health insurance and operational expenses. Charles said donations of any amount are welcome.

She hinted that an immediate way to assist would be to buy tickets for a fundraiser being hosted by the Tortola Ladies Club on January 30th, 2015, 7pm at Government House. Tickets are $40 per person. A big raffle is being held and tickets are $2 each and $10 for a book of six tickets.

Persons or organizations willing to help fund the operations of the Family Support Network can get further information, including a copy of the FSN’s Annual Report, from the FSN’s Office at 494 7622.
