Values, norms, & failed states

The Virgin Islands adopts the western values model of freedom, democracy, tolerance, and multi-ethnic harmony. This is the result of its historical heritage and geographic location. However, there are moral gaps in the culture of these islands that can threaten prosperity. Ironically, these gaps developed with the boom in the offshore finance and tourism industry in the late 1990s. The third and final story will “zero in” on the Virgin Islands cultural model and its present deficits.

Culture is the software of community. It enables the effective functioning of society. Culture paints upon the national tapestry the values and norms, and the rules and customs of yesteryear. It blends these “precious offerings” into modernity. Culture enriches and empowers.

Hundreds flock to Anegada for the 3rd annual Lobster Festival

THE SETTLEMENT, Anegada, VI - It was three days of eating, drinking and getting there via by power boats, plane or ferry for the 2015 Anegada Lobster Festival. Hundreds of people from both the Virgin Islands and United States Virgin Islands flocked to Anegada, the northernmost Island of the Virgin Islands archipelago. Anegada is the only inhabited island in the Virgin Islands (VI) that is formed from coral and limestone.
