ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Part of the criticism of the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) of Premier and Minister of Finance Dr The Hon D. Orlando Smith (AL) is that immediately after hurricanes Irma and Maria they abandoned the people. Some international media went further, claiming the government collapsed.

One of the areas they cited is the poor response by the government towards the injustice shown to residents by insurance companies on filing and receiving adequate claims.

Government response: A meeting & a Bill!

In response to these allegations, Premier Smith told the House of Assembly (HoA) last week in a statement that he has met with the insurance companies and “In the meeting, I also stressed the urgent need to get claims processed so residents can rebuild their homes and have safe housing for those that are still displaced, and for commercial properties to be restored to bring back services that have been disrupted. I will continue to have these meetings,” Dr Smith said.

However, now three months after Hurricanes Irma and Maria, many residents and business owners still have not received a dime on their claims; however, Premier Smith told the HoA last week that “On December 4, 2017 we passed the Financial Services Business Continuity Act 2017. Within that act there is provision for the establishment of an Insurance Tribunal. Before the end of the year we expect to appoint members of the community and industry to the Tribunal to support residents wishing to investigate, report or have some meditation before claims are finalised.”

Little too late? Cline to the rescue

However, many residents scoffed at this late response as they are anxious to get on with their lives.

Social Commentator and former Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority, Mr Claude O. Skelton-Cline has stepped in to bring relevant information to the people of the Territory on insurances claims.

The host of the popular radio show, Honestly Speaking aired on local radio station ZBVI 780, announced today, December 18, 2017 that home and business owners of the Virgin Islands (VI) will have a chance to meet with professional international insurance adjustors at a free meeting to be held tomorrow Tuesday, December 19, 2017. The meeting comes at a time when many homeowners remained disgruntled following stalled talks with insurers while others have expressed their disappointment with settlement amounts presented by the insurance companies.

Following from his show two weeks ago and the many requests for information, Mr Skelton-Cline will have on hand Mr Michael A. Fusco, Chief Executive Officer of World Claim, an organisation dedicated to helping residents, where they operate, to address insurance claim procedures with knowledge that may change the outcome of insurance claims that are presented.

Mr Fusco, who has been in the insurance business for more than two decades, will, in conjunction with Mr Skelton-Cline, host a forum which will allow persons who have yet to settle and accept the proposed amount of money, to ask questions and get answers to better position themselves during the sometimes difficult insurance conversations.

The meeting, which is at no cost to residents and businesses, will be held on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at 6:15 P.M. at the Save the Seed Energy Centre's Basketball Court, in Duffs Bottom, on the main island of Tortola.

Residents with questions and unsettled insurance claims are asked to make a special effort to attend.

People beware.... That adjuster not for free! He will give you a bill which is a % of the insurance claim settlement. I hear all the BVI investment club people using him and it will only slow down negotiations with the insurance companies. I know what I'm saying so people beware

you misunderstand, these guys take only % of the improvement they get for you. Insurers offer something low then he uses experience and expertise to get you what you ought to get and takes a small fee only if he can produce for you.
